Mitochondria represent the building blocks of life and the powerhouses of cells. The design draws on the elegant structures of cell division, chromosomes, and DNA strands—the fundamental sources of the work’s inspiration. The artwork is integrated into the grand staircase at Emery Station West, a cutting-edge medical research center designed by the architectural firm Perkins & Will.
