Aerial Roots

Title: Aerial Roots

Year: 2003

Media: Bronze

Size: 5’ x 7’

Location: Aquatic Room, Conservatory of Flowers, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA

Client: City of San Francisco in collaboration with the directors of The Strybing Arboretum and The Conservatory, ISEC Corporation Contractors, Portico Group Architects, and Friends of Parks and Recreation.

The sinuous bronze runners that suspend the bronze Aerial Roots mimic the wondrous, specialized aerial root plants that grow above ground in the Conservatory of Flowers, one of San Francisco’s most well-loved architectural gems. The plants primarily grow on tropical vines, epiphytes, and swamp trees. They blend beautifully into the junglelike environment of the aquatic room.
